Don Meek, an OU alumnus, returned to OU in 1949 to serve as the men’s basketball coach. Prior to coming back to OU; he served in World War II, was a teacher and coach for four years in Kansas high schools, and then spent two years at Wayne State University.

As head men’s basketball coach for the Braves (1949-50 to 1954-55) he had an overall record of 92-50. Meek led OU to four conference championships and two second place finishes. He coached 18 All-Conference performers and led OU to the 1950-51 NAIA Men’s Basketball National Tournament held in Kansas City, Mo.

As a student-athlete at Ottawa University (1937-39); Meek earned letters in football, basketball, and track as a junior and senior after transferring from his hometown Fort Scott Community College. Meek earned First Team All-Conference honors on the basketball court for the Braves in 1938-39. On the football field, he was a First Team All-Conference selection as a running back in 1938. Meek was the1938 conference champion in track and field in the shot put and earned All-Conference honors in the discus. In 1939, he was the conference track and field champion in the discus. Meek was also part of the 1938 and 1939 Conference Championship Teams.

Meek left Ottawa University in 1955, but continued teaching and coaching at other schools for a total of 34 years.
