Winn earned letters in football (1969-72) and track (1969-72).

On the track, Winn was the 1971 NAIA National Champion in the javelin. He finished runner up in 1972, finishing his career as a two-time NAIA All-American. In 36 track and field meets in his four year career, Winn only finished out of first in the javelin five times. He broke five meet records and set OU’s mark in the javelin at 254-03 at the Drake Relays. Winn was the Missouri Valley AAU Champion and the Drake Relay Champion in the javelin. He is a three-time KCAC Champion (1969-71) in the javelin and won the HAAC Championship in 1972. On the gridiron he was a four year starter at defensive back and was a member of the 1970 KCAC Championship team and 1972 HAAC Championship team. Winn led the team and broke the school record with 10 interceptions in 1972. That single season mark held until 2000. He was a First Team All-HAAC performer and earned First Team All-District 10 honors in 1972. Winn had two interceptions in the 1972 Mineral Water Bowl victory over Friends University. He finished his career with 19 interceptions, which ties Winn for first in the school record books. After graduating from Ottawa University, Winn went on to work at Winn Merchandising and Hendrick Chevrolet in Shawnee Mission, Kan.
