Math Placement Exam Requirement

All incoming Ottawa University students must complete the math placement exam. The purpose of the math placement exam is to asses your mathematical knowledge and problem-solving abilities for the singular purpose of placing you into the appropriate college math course. We want you to have the greatest opportunity for success. To help you prepare for the test, you can download PDF documents that cover topics on the exam and practice problems. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is required to take the math placement test?
A: All incoming students are required to take the placement exam. It is strongly recommended for students enrolled prior to Fall 2009.

Q: What is the placement exam for?
A: Your score on the math placement exam will determine the highest level of math you can enroll in. The three courses it will place you in are Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, and Pre-calculus.

Q: Can I take the exam again if I don't do as well as I think I can?
A: Yes. You may take the exam a second time at a later date.

Q: Do I have to enroll in a math class if I plan to take the exam a second time?
A: It is strongly encouraged that you enroll in the courses you test into the first time because classes fill quickly.

Q: What if I test into a lower course on the second exam?
A: We will take the higher of your placements.

Q: Is the exam multiple choice?
A: Yes.

Q: Can I use a calculator on the exam?
A: No.

Q: How long does the placement exam take?
A: You will be given one hour to take the exam.

Q: What do I need to bring to the placement exam?
A: Yourself.

Q: Do my other math class grades or ACT score affect what course I am in?
A: Your previous math class grades are not taken into consideration. However, your ACT and score from the exam will be used to determine the level of course you can enroll in.

Q: What if I would like to take Calculus I or Calculus II?
A: You must take the exam and then contact Nicole Leonhard at mathplacement@ottawa.edu for further assessment.
