Renewed Agreement Leads to Family Education

Living in Montana, Carla Melton grew up thinking she was Qua Paw. Not that she ever had a desire to verify the assumption, however. “Being ‘Indian’ back then was as unpopular as being black in the South,” she recalls. So it wasn’t until her parents died within nine years of each other that she began to think about her heritage as a Native American. With encouragement from her aunt, Melton began to dig into her family’s genealogy as a coping mechanism for her grief. What she discovered was to change the lives of her entire family.
